Mitred Blanket Squares

This post got missed.  The squares  were actually finished in July an are already part of a blanket

At the June meeting of the quilt guild,  I was given various Worsted Weight yarns to make squares for charity
There was a great variety of colours and a definite variation in yarn weight.
There was no pattern just a request for garter stitch squares between 6 an 7 inches square
I chose to make mitred squares as they are usually close to square

I started with 3 stitches and then increased 1 stitch either side of the centre stitch on alternate rows until the side of the square were the right size. Then decrease until back to 1 stitch
The number of rows to get to 6 inches varied considerably with the yarn. that just confirms that they were different weights

Altogether there were twenty one 6 inch squares which MW took to be sewn together to make blankets

I think she said that we had made 72 blankets already !!

Lobstah Tails Hats

Well here are the other hats from the left over yarn from the 3R's cardigans

Another easy pattern
This time the pattern repeat was wrong . It's 14 stitches not 12
Also crown decreases did not quite match up
Easy to deal with once recognized

My first attempt was with the pink yarn

I cast on 84 stitches and did K1P1 rib for 8 rows
No increase row
5 pattern repeats +1 row then decreases as written
49 g yarn 4.5 mm needles

Red Hats
Both the same
Cast on 96 sts
No modification
5 pattern repeats +1 row
54g yarn 5mm needles

2021 Liquorice Hats

I had quite a bit of yarn left over from the 3 R's cardigans
The Quilt Guild always makes donations at Christmas time so I set to to make some hats

This pattern looked interesting so I started out with some of the pink yarn

I cast on 80 sts as per the pattern and then increased to 96.
That seemed to be a very odd beginning
I used 4.5mm needles throughout which made for a tight fabric
2 and a half pattern repeats
60g of yarn

There seemed to be some inaccuracies in the pattern but northing that couldn't be fixed
e.g. pattern repeat is suggested doesn't mesh with crown decreases

There was a lot more yarn from K's sweater so I made 2 more hats

Red #1
Followed the pattern as written but upped the needles for the body of the hat to 5mm
80sts 4.5 mm +5 mm needles
2 and a half pattern repeats
58g of yarn

Red#2
Cast on 96 sts K2P1 rib on 4.5mm
3 full repeats of pattern on 5 mm
64g yarn

This was a fiddly pattern so slow to grow but an interesting design.
The mods for the final hat made more sense to me and certainly the hat seemed fine
I used the small size throughout and yet all 3 came out big enough for me

2020 Blomidon Hats

After I finished up all my bits of worsted yarn to make hats to give away at Christmas through NCQG, I looked out all the left over DK yarn.

Definitely enough for more hats but not enough for anything bigger

I chose this pattern as it seemed a little more exciting than plain knit or rib

Turned out to be a lovely pattern and easy to remember

Just enough yarn for 6 hats of differing sizes

Finally I have used up all the leftover bits of yarn in the stash.

That's a great feeling.

The yarn was put to good use and not thrown away and now there will be some warmer heads somewhere in the county this winter

2020 Bankhead Hats

I have been using up all my bits of worsted yarn to make hats to give away at Christmas through NCQG

I had thought that there would be enough of the navy yarn left from K and B's sweaters for one more but there is definitely not enough.

As I have now no worsted yarn in my stash that is it for this year

6  hats in total which is way better than last year!

2019 Winter Hats

Well I had planned to make a whole lot of hats ready for the NCQG December meeting. I realised on Friday had not made even one!!

Found R's red and gray hat from last year which she refused to accept as it was "too furry"

Had enough of the Bernat Mushroom Super Value yarn left to make a simple Barley hat

So that is it for this year - just 2 hats

No pictures - they are the same as the earlier versions

2018 Charity Knits

Next week is delivery day for Charity donations through the Quilt Guild

I have made a variety of sizes of mitts and hats.   All were made from my stash so some are striped and they are in various weights of yarn

I feel better about sending these to the guild as I know that they will be distributed immediately rather than sitting in a box hoping for someone to pull them out for sale before they are old and out of style

I have 6 pairs of hand knit socks which I have never worn.   I decided that as I am unlikely to ever wear them, they can go into the bag as well.

Hats again

I have decided to leave the NGH Craft Group.
I have been frustrated with the resistance to change for some time.  In addition I found that all the hats and mittens which I had made before leaving for Florida in December are still sitting on the pricing table.  They really aren't doing any good there. I wonder how long they are going to sit in boxes on a shelf?

I still have lots of yarn and have learned that NCQG can use hats and mitts in all sizes in their winter packages for our local charities.  This means that they will go straight to people who need them . I feel much better about that. So I am knitting away -  mostly children's hats but one or two adult hats too.    I have to find some teenage boy styles too.
