2024 GKRKB February Hats

A tradition seems to have been established that I knit a hat for each of the  5R's to collect when they come for Thanksgiving

An easy pattern to follow
I did not make the double brim just one thickness of K1P1 rib

I cast on 96 stitches as I tend to knit tightly so I had to modify the crown decreases

The body of the hat has blocks of different stitches
I followed the pattern exactly in the Pink Dust for miss B.

The others have various combinations of moss stiich and broken rib.
The purple and blue hats also have a slipstitch rib section

2023RKB Hats

There was enough yarn left from the camp blankets to make the 3R's their hats for the winter

This is a simple pattern which lends itself to stripes

I needed to do some juggling with the stripes but managed to get all 3 finished quite quickly

3 R's Camp Blanket #2

At last I have 63 squares sewn together!

I took the blue yarns with me to Florida and had hoped to get further than I did.  I came home with 63 squares in the 2 lighter shades of blue.  I had planned to use 2 colours and alternate the squares.  When I got home and laid it out, I really didn't like it. So I  added the darker blue and did some rearranging.
This is a much better layout

The centre square came out well. I may use a similar idea for B when I get to it
I am going to put this to one side and get B's squares knitted before I start on the crochet edge

24 April 2023
Crochet edging of 3 rows completed
First 2 rows in Sky Grey and third row in Shadow Blue

B's squares are all knitted but none sewn together yet

2022 Hats for 5 R's

I usually make a new hat for each of the 3 little R's each winter

This time I decided to make one for Mum and Dad too

A really easy pattern. Well written and easy to follow

I made a 2 inch double brim in K1P1 rib on all 5 hats
The Lilac is for B so it has 100 stitches and only 4 cable repeats before the crown decreases
All the others followed the pattern for the body of the hat as written

RKB's Toques

Lots of yarn left over from K's Red Sweater so decided to make him a hat

Very straightforward pattern

Maybe a little short for an adult and also a bit tight  for bigger heads but all in all a great pattern

69g red

Such an easy pattern used it to make a pink hat for B with the yarn left from her sweater

Made the brim and body a little shorter but otherwise as per pattern
67g pink

R needed a hat too. Hers is 96 sts and 6 1/2in body
Not enough blue for a solid colour hat so added pink stripes of B's yarn
63g blue + 21g pink =84g total

R's Blue Sweater

Here is the second sweater by request.  It is a soft baby blue in reality not grey at all.

This is a good basic pattern but the chest measurements are rather large
Used size 6 for chest measurement and it may still be too large
Finished chest is 30 ins and R is a very slim 24 ins

Adjusted lengths:
Arm length 13 ins
Body to armhole 14 ins

Added decorative border as chosen by R
The tulip buttons were also chosen by R

Really pleased with this
Just hope it isn't too big

R's Pretty in Purple Cardigan

This yarn came from a kit for a scarf and hat
Finally realized that I am never going to make that so I used the yarn to make this cardigan

All the yarns are DK and coordinate well
There maybe just enough of the other colours to make a little one for Miss B too

Quite happy with the way it turned out
Knitted the body in one piece to the armholes so that the stripes match exactly
Had a bit of a panic that there wasn't going to be enough purple yarn so added the green stripes.
As it turned out I had a whole ball of purple yarn left at the end but I wasn't about to rip all that knitting out

Trafalgar Hats

Had quite a lot of this navy yarn left over
Thought I would be able to make a hat with it
Turned out that there was enough for 2
Luckily I had a tiny bit of the same yarn in pink

So I made Mother and daughter hats for KJMR and MRR

I think I'll give the navy one to Momma and the pink and navy to MRR but then I happen to know that KJMR loves the pink and navy combo

RKB's Winter Things

When R & K came to visit a couple of weeks ago, they each asked for a winter scarf as they didn't think they had any.
We looked through my stash and R chose this blue and white variegated yarn

Here's R's Scarf

We had used my snowflake scarf to see how long it needed to be and R liked the pattern so I made one for her. It curls just like mine but that seems to keep me as warm as a rib scarf

Size: 44'' long 35 sts wide
Pattern: Snowflake Scarf from Winter Lace Scarves
Yarn: Patons Canadiana
Colour: Light Pastels

Here's K's Scarf

K wanted an orange scarf and I had no orange yarn in my stash. It was easy to find a single ball at Len's Mill. It is a very bright neon so no one will miss seeing him
I decided a rib would be more masculine and used my mistake rib stitch pattern

Size: 44'' long 43 sts wide
Pattern: Mistake Rib
Yarn: Caron Simply Soft
Colour: Neon Orange

Here's B's Hat

It didn't seem right not to make something for B even though she is too little for a scarf.
So I found a hat pattern and some stash yarn for her

More Christmas Stockings

When our family was here for Christmas it seemed that the little ones didn't have stockings of their own so I thought it would be nice to make them some.

I had lots of yarn left over from the stockings I made last year for my niece's family.

Followed the same pattern

Notes can be seen in this post:  Christmas Stockings

Silver Berries Cardigan

Here's the Christmas cardi for the big sister

Knew I didn't have enough red yarn so added the light grey stripe pattern

Used up most of my red yarn but enough left for a hat

October Knitting

Another month busy knitting for NGH  - more mittens and some baby sweaters
I think I got them finished in time for the Christmas sales season
It must be time for a change as I have the mitten pattern memorised!

MRR  was fascinated with the little pink sweater. She was hoping it was for her.  I'm not sure if she really needs a new sweater . She is still wearing the DK pink and purple sweater which I made last year. This particular one would have been too small any way.

I will need to focus on family for the next little while as there is a new great niece on the way

Pink and Purple Cardi

A pretty little cardi for Miss R.

Used a pattern which I bought when ADHR was about the same age so it is an oldie but goodie!!

Love this pattern!!
Modified to use two colours not one.
The dark purple is Italian Plum the body is a variegated pink and purple called Princess Purple.  Just right for a little girl who is obsessed with princesses!

Modified the pattern panel on the body to add an extra row of holes
Modified the pattern panel on the sleeves so that it was only one row of holes
Made the 4 year old size but a little shorter in the arms

Antler Hats

OOPs missed posting these

Needed a portable project for a week away
Took the blue and purple  yarns to make winter hats to match the cardis
Pretty much followed the pattern

Made a 3 inch rib K1P1 for blue and K2 P2 for purple
6 pattern repeats before decreasing
Fits my head without a turn up. Should fit theirs with a nice deep turn up over the ears

Purple Aran Cardi

Another of the getting ready for winter projects.

It's in purple which is still MRR's favourite colour

A very similar pattern to KDR's sweater.
Super easy no problems
I made the button up version to keep out the cold on the walk to daycare
It looks big but then she is growing!!

Baby Green Cardi

I bought 6 skeins of this yarn at a Lens Mill Tent Sale. It must have been in 2013 or early 2014 as I bought it intending to make some baby things for Baby R #2.  That didn't happen but he did get lots of other knitted things from his Granny.

It is really a very soft green and doesn't seem to say KDR to me.   So this is going to be made into things for MRR.

I started this sweater in September thinking that it would be good for this winter but Mom said she did not need any more sweaters for this year.
So I put it on one side and then made the 4 year old size so it is all ready for next year

Doll Blanket

I was sure that I already wrote this up.  I have no idea where the post went but maybe I just put it up on Ravelry

Made this  using left over scraps from the two baby blankets I made for MRR. She loves to wrap her dolls up and sing them to sleep so this will be part of her Christmas present.
I picked up around the edge once I was out of the different coloured scraps and then added extra rows in pink to make it rectangular so that it would fit her doll crib

Raspberry's Purple Stripes

As I suspected the little pink sweater was too small.  Too narrow by a long way

I bought some purple yarn as that is Little Miss' favourite colour right now and started again

I followed the 8 year size as I calculated with the yarn and needles I was using that would result in a 24 inch sweater
I adjusted sleeve length and sweater length too

4 buttons so that if the sweater is a little long then it won't restrict her legs

Sleeve seam 8 inch
underarm seam 8 1/2 inch
Added decreases every 6 rows for sleeves
8 rows rib for sleeves and sweater
5 rows rib for front bands

Yikes Pink Stripes

Found this pattern on Ravelry
I loved the look of it

I was disappointed in the sizing.  It was long and thin which should have fitted Miss R just fine but after 3 attempts I finally made the 4 year old size using larger needles.  This turned out to be just 21 inches around.  I am not hopeful that it will fit.

I still love the look and will try again with thicker yarn and an even larger size.

Size: 4 Years

Yarn: Sirdar Snuggly DK

Colour: Party Pink, Strawberry Mousse, Lilac

Edited to add:
It didn't fit a very slim 2 year old! So it is in the donation pile.  I'll try again with thicker yarn and larger needles.  I think there is going to be some math in my future!!

Coral Sanquhar Bonnet & Mitts

Christmas gifts for MRR

I decided to try some Fair Isle knitting to make a winter hat and mitts. I found a book of baby knits with a variety of stranded/intarsia style patterns. The hat is from the Fair Isle section and the mitts are of Norwegian origin.
I am hoping that these will be warmer than regular knitted hat and mitts.

There were quite few problems with the hat. I found that the stitches kept slipping off the dpns. The knitted fabric was very stiff and the yarns which I had chosen from my left over boxes, did not have sufficient contrast.  The pattern was written for 2.25 mm needles.

The smallest circular l owned was 3.25 mm which meant I had to make major modifications to the pattern. It took several attempts and a change in yarn to get anything like an acceptable fabric.  I think the hat is more open than I would like .  After l knitted the mitts, I realized that 2.75 mm needles would have been ideal.

The mitts are knitted according to the pattern on 2.75 mm dpns. That fabric is much stiffer and therefore probably warmer.
I love the look of these patterns and would like to try adapting them for adult size mitts and maybe hat too!
