2024 GKRKB February Hats

A tradition seems to have been established that I knit a hat for each of the  5R's to collect when they come for Thanksgiving

An easy pattern to follow
I did not make the double brim just one thickness of K1P1 rib

I cast on 96 stitches as I tend to knit tightly so I had to modify the crown decreases

The body of the hat has blocks of different stitches
I followed the pattern exactly in the Pink Dust for miss B.

The others have various combinations of moss stiich and broken rib.
The purple and blue hats also have a slipstitch rib section

2023RKB Hats

There was enough yarn left from the camp blankets to make the 3R's their hats for the winter

This is a simple pattern which lends itself to stripes

I needed to do some juggling with the stripes but managed to get all 3 finished quite quickly

3 R's Camp Blankets #1

K's blanket is sewn together. It needs a finished edge.

I think I'll crochet around but I plan to leave that until all three are sewn together

March 2023

Decided to add edging of 3 rows single crochet in purple.  Still working on R and B's squares

2022 Hats for 5 R's

I usually make a new hat for each of the 3 little R's each winter

This time I decided to make one for Mum and Dad too

A really easy pattern. Well written and easy to follow

I made a 2 inch double brim in K1P1 rib on all 5 hats
The Lilac is for B so it has 100 stitches and only 4 cable repeats before the crown decreases
All the others followed the pattern for the body of the hat as written

2021 Liquorice Hats

I had quite a bit of yarn left over from the 3 R's cardigans
The Quilt Guild always makes donations at Christmas time so I set to to make some hats

This pattern looked interesting so I started out with some of the pink yarn

I cast on 80 sts as per the pattern and then increased to 96.
That seemed to be a very odd beginning
I used 4.5mm needles throughout which made for a tight fabric
2 and a half pattern repeats
60g of yarn

There seemed to be some inaccuracies in the pattern but northing that couldn't be fixed
e.g. pattern repeat is suggested doesn't mesh with crown decreases

There was a lot more yarn from K's sweater so I made 2 more hats

Red #1
Followed the pattern as written but upped the needles for the body of the hat to 5mm
80sts 4.5 mm +5 mm needles
2 and a half pattern repeats
58g of yarn

Red#2
Cast on 96 sts K2P1 rib on 4.5mm
3 full repeats of pattern on 5 mm
64g yarn

This was a fiddly pattern so slow to grow but an interesting design.
The mods for the final hat made more sense to me and certainly the hat seemed fine
I used the small size throughout and yet all 3 came out big enough for me

RKB's Toques

Lots of yarn left over from K's Red Sweater so decided to make him a hat

Very straightforward pattern

Maybe a little short for an adult and also a bit tight  for bigger heads but all in all a great pattern

69g red

Such an easy pattern used it to make a pink hat for B with the yarn left from her sweater

Made the brim and body a little shorter but otherwise as per pattern
67g pink

R needed a hat too. Hers is 96 sts and 6 1/2in body
Not enough blue for a solid colour hat so added pink stripes of B's yarn
63g blue + 21g pink =84g total

K's Red Sweater

We had some young visitors last month.  We hadn't seen them in such a long time due to all the Covid19 restrictions and had a great time

Just before we were getting ready to leave to take them home, R asked if I would knit her a sweater.  Of course I said yes and we discussed what colour and style she would like and then we measured her

As we were doing this K asked if he could have one too. So we talked about colour, style and measurements for him too

He was really very serious about this and said "You know Gran maybe you should make them a little bigger than our measurements because we will have grown by the time it is cold enough to wear them!!"

I was so impressed by his thought pattern

What a great little guy!!

So here is his red sweater a little bigger than he is right now but hopefully big enough to last for the winter

I used the pattern as a base but had to make several modifications as the chest measurement was huge.  I added rib panels to both fronts and sleeves and 2 rib panels to the back.

Arm lengths had to be adjusted as well as he has much longer arms than the pattern

I put a zipper up the front as that seemed more boy like than buttons

It went in fairly easily.  First sewn by hand and then machined in for extra strength

Now I guess I have to start on R's sweater so that they each have one

K's Navy Sweater

Needed to make sweater for K as I had one for each of his sisters

Bought a huge ball of yarn which seemed thin enough to knit up as  DK knit UK style

I found this old pattern which seemed just perfect for a growing school boy

so here it is:

If I was to knit this again I would change the raglan to cast off 5 at the armhole and then decrease one stitch at each side on every knit row.  Decreasing 2 for the first 2 knit rows gives a very steep curve

Bankhead Hats

Needed to make hats for the other members of the family

Still have lots of left over yarn.  So father and son hats it is

Here is the one for KDR

This was a very easy pattern very clear and no issues at all

I thought the crown decreases might not work but in fact they make a really nice finish

Very happy with the result

I made Adult Large to be sure that it isn't too small.  The rib can easily be turned back if needed

Here's the one for G

RKB's Winter Things

When R & K came to visit a couple of weeks ago, they each asked for a winter scarf as they didn't think they had any.
We looked through my stash and R chose this blue and white variegated yarn

Here's R's Scarf

We had used my snowflake scarf to see how long it needed to be and R liked the pattern so I made one for her. It curls just like mine but that seems to keep me as warm as a rib scarf

Size: 44'' long 35 sts wide
Pattern: Snowflake Scarf from Winter Lace Scarves
Yarn: Patons Canadiana
Colour: Light Pastels

Here's K's Scarf

K wanted an orange scarf and I had no orange yarn in my stash. It was easy to find a single ball at Len's Mill. It is a very bright neon so no one will miss seeing him
I decided a rib would be more masculine and used my mistake rib stitch pattern

Size: 44'' long 43 sts wide
Pattern: Mistake Rib
Yarn: Caron Simply Soft
Colour: Neon Orange

Here's B's Hat

It didn't seem right not to make something for B even though she is too little for a scarf.
So I found a hat pattern and some stash yarn for her

More Christmas Stockings

When our family was here for Christmas it seemed that the little ones didn't have stockings of their own so I thought it would be nice to make them some.

I had lots of yarn left over from the stockings I made last year for my niece's family.

Followed the same pattern

Notes can be seen in this post:  Christmas Stockings

True Blue Cardigan

I had no intention of knitting any more sweaters for the two littles but then I found this wool and some for his sister at the back of the yarn cupboard. So here it is - one last cardigan for a little boy who is now a big school boy!!!

This is an old pattern bought in the UK from a mail order yarn manufacturer I used to patronise.

I added rib panels to both sleeves and the back but forgot about the fronts until I was well on the way. As I wanted this for Christmas and I still have to knit the one for his sister, I decided to leave them plain.

I thought he was big enough to use most of this yarn but surprise - I still have a whole ball left.

Maybe there is enough for a hat if I have time

Yes definitely enough for a hat.  Used the ball of worsted that got mixed in with the DK.  Just enough yarn for a simple stocking stitch hat on 4mm needles

Antler Hats

OOPs missed posting these

Needed a portable project for a week away
Took the blue and purple  yarns to make winter hats to match the cardis
Pretty much followed the pattern

Made a 3 inch rib K1P1 for blue and K2 P2 for purple
6 pattern repeats before decreasing
Fits my head without a turn up. Should fit theirs with a nice deep turn up over the ears

Blue Sock Yarn Cardi

Third winter Cardi for KDR

This was a very easy pattern and knitted up very quickly. I knew I might be a little short on yarn so I made several modifications. to the pattern

Rib: all K2P2
Body:
Followed 162 sts size but did not cast on 162 sts as that was way too big
140 for rib and then decreased to 126 immediately omitting decreases in body
Added a reverse stocking stitch band for interest
Adjusted length to 9inches from rib to armhole
Sleeves: as pattern
Yoke:
Ran low on yarn so mixed in the Cherub DK which was a perfect colour match.
Added some extra decrease rows at top of sleeves and across back
Neck:
Picked up 84 stitches and decreased to 68
Band is done entirely in DK (held double)

Blue Professor Sweater

A second lighter weight sweater for KDR
I loved the look of the pattern which had stripes around the bottom of the body and sleeves but when I got started I realised that there was going to be plenty of yarn left over so I opted not to stripe but to add fancy buttons

Avery easy pattern and very quick to knit up I can't quite believe I have already finished it!!

The size is still a little skinny No real mods just added an extra garter ridge to button band

Blue Son's Cardi

This is getting ready for the winter.  I seem to have a limit on how much knitting I can do in a day before my wrists and shoulders ache so I have to get started now!!

I have always loved aran style sweaters so here is one for KDR. It looks huge but then he is not a little boy!
I made a v neck as he still doesn't really have a neck to speak of.

The colour in the photo is way off. It is a lovely pale blue
A simple enough pattern apart from the pockets. I have no idea what was intended but I tried and failed to make any sense of that part of the pattern. I reverted to my traditional method which worked fine.

King's Tranquil Cardi

A reasonably quick knit.

King's Green Stripes

Unlike the pink sweater, this one is on size but it has an 18/24 month old size as 24 inches .
I am fairly sure it will be too big for Master R  but it should fit Miss R. Although it may be short on her!!
It is made entirely from stash which makes it free!!

Easy pattern no problems at all
