MKH Baby things

M is expecting a bay in November so we will be great grandparents!! As she is out in Calgary we won't be able to see her before the birth.  We wanted to give her something so I decided to make a small quilt as well as some little knits

We don't know the gender or if there is a colour scheme for the nursery so I decided to play it safe with a bright yellow yarn.  There was enough yarn (just!!) in one 100g ball to make a little cardigan , a hat and a pair of socks

B's Little Green Cardi

This is the second little sweater from stashed Astra yarns
It turned out really well
I used the pattern for stitch and row counts but nothing else

The body was knitted in one from the bottom up to the armholes

This was easier when trying to use up odd lengths of yarn and made sure that the stripes matched across the whole garment

B's Aqua Lace Bouquets Cardi

Had quite a lot of leftover Astra yarn in a variety of green colours
I have no idea how long I have had it but it needed using up
Should be enough for 2 little cardi's for little Miss B

This is sweater #1

There was almost enough of the Aqua but not quite so I used some white as contrast.
I think it worked out very well
I did not do the lacy bits on the sleeves as little fingers can so easily get caught in the holes and I had the stripes to contend with too!

Baby Blanket #3

Well baby #3 needs her own blankies .  I used the same pattern as for MRR and KDR but different colours.

Here is the first of the two

It took about 2 weeks to knit , so I should have time to get the other one done after our vacation!!
This one was as easy as the others.  I added 8 garter rows for the border on this one.

Sweet Yellow Sunnyside Cardigan

Made for new great nephew, AJW.

Love this pattern
I changed the cable pattern
Only put 3 buttons on

There was some yellow yarn left so I started a simple hat.
Needed some white stripes to make it .

Baby Things

A new great niece is on the way so this is for her

I have knitted this sweater several times.
The pattern is so easy and looks so good
I carried the lacy pattern all the way down the sides of the sweater as well as the fron
If I make this again I may add a cable down the middle of the back

The hat was improvised based on Kate Atherley's Sock Yarn Baby Hat.
I used fewer stitches and a k1p1rib to start then added some garter rows for textural interest as this is a solid yarn.

Baby Duck Cardi

Another little project for NGH.

I saw this pattern online and thought it would be great for KDR but Mommy didn't seem too keen. I still wanted to try the pattern so I used NGH yarn

I am quite pleased with the finished cardi but I am not happy with the colourwork. I found it hard to keep the stitches even. This is probably the last of this style that I will make. I'd rather do cables and stitch patterns.
It was an easy pattern. No armhole shaping . I may use it as a basic cardi.  The downside is being knitted in pieces. I think I could knit the body up to the armholes all in one and then divide. I might even try picking up the sleeves and doing them on dpns.

Doll Blanket

I was sure that I already wrote this up.  I have no idea where the post went but maybe I just put it up on Ravelry

Made this  using left over scraps from the two baby blankets I made for MRR. She loves to wrap her dolls up and sing them to sleep so this will be part of her Christmas present.
I picked up around the edge once I was out of the different coloured scraps and then added extra rows in pink to make it rectangular so that it would fit her doll crib

Hats, Hats, Hats!

We have a lot of yarn and needles in our Craft Group Store Room. I thought we could put some of the single odd balls and turn them into Craft Kits.
I needed to draft a pattern. Hats are fairly easy and quick so I have made several to test my pattern

The two draft versions which will go to NGH for sale as well as showing what the Craft Kits should look like

The two smaller versions which used up most of the Tranquil yarn.  Theses will go to the littlest ones for winter

King's Tranquil Cardi

A nice simple but stylish cardi.
A reasonably quick knit.

Used the yarn left from the Baby Belle Cardi which I made for his sister.

Still have enough for 2 hats. One for each of them

Pink Elephants

I put this to one side so I could make the purple striped cardi for MRR.

Photo will have to wait until I get my desk top sorted out.

I improvised this using  King's Green Stripes as a guide.
The elephants were added from a single motif modified to make the border

Baby Blake

Another English great nephew is due in March So I got busy and knitted a little hoodie and a hat.

The Hoodie turned out to be a little big but that's OK as babies grow!!

The original pattern has three different coloured stripes and is entirely in stocking stitch.  I decided to just use the solid blue for emphasis and so I used 2 rows of garter stitch after each block of 12 stocking stitch rows.
I really like the way this turned out.  The pattern is easy to follow and the solid blue really makes it pop out of the variegated yarn.

I saw this pattern for a hat ages ago and wanted to try it.  It is knit on dpns and that was little tricky at times with the cables.
This was a lovely pattern and easy to follow. The decreases are all hidden in the cable panels.  The cables themselves decrease in size and length as the hat grows.  Very neat!!

I made and icord loop instead of a pom pom for the top .  I followed the pattern and made strings to tie it with   I am not sure about the safety issues with those.  They can be cut off if L is concerned.

I wish I had used some of the solid blue so that the colour didn't quite so washed out.  There is plenty of yarn left for me to try another one in that colourway.

Coral Sanquhar Bonnet & Mitts

Christmas gifts for MRR

I decided to try some Fair Isle knitting to make a winter hat and mitts. I found a book of baby knits with a variety of stranded/intarsia style patterns. The hat is from the Fair Isle section and the mitts are of Norwegian origin.
I am hoping that these will be warmer than regular knitted hat and mitts.

There were quite few problems with the hat. I found that the stitches kept slipping off the dpns. The knitted fabric was very stiff and the yarns which I had chosen from my left over boxes, did not have sufficient contrast.  The pattern was written for 2.25 mm needles.

The smallest circular l owned was 3.25 mm which meant I had to make major modifications to the pattern. It took several attempts and a change in yarn to get anything like an acceptable fabric.  I think the hat is more open than I would like .  After l knitted the mitts, I realized that 2.75 mm needles would have been ideal.

The mitts are knitted according to the pattern on 2.75 mm dpns. That fabric is much stiffer and therefore probably warmer.
I love the look of these patterns and would like to try adapting them for adult size mitts and maybe hat too!

Sand Aviatrix Hat and Puppet Mitts

Little Miss R needs a hat that she can't pull off.  I saw this pattern some tine ago and thought it might fit the bill.  I went through my stash to find some yarn and came up with this from 2010.  It's acrylic but very soft.

Sand Aviatrix Hat

It was a quick an easy knit. I made 3 buttonholes on the strap and added 2 buttons so that it is adjustable.  She is coming for a visit next week so we'll see if it does the trick.

The pattern is written for three different yarn weights.   If it is a success. I'll probably knit one in thicker wool yarn

Size:  55 sts

Yarn:Mary Maxim Mellowspun
Colour: Sand

I made a pair of little mitts to match. She doesn't like wearing them either!!

Size: 29 sts

Yarn:Mary Maxim Mellowspun
Colour: Sand

As a further attempt to keep mittens on hands I knit these little puppet mitts.  The pattern is from an old leaflet which I remember my mother using to make mitts for my younger brother and sister.

These turned out a little small and not very easy to get on little hands.  I'll try again for next winter but up size them  quite a bit

Small Taupe Hat

The last of the Taupe yarn
I had enough to make a small hat

Used the same pattern as before.  This time I just used fewer stitches but followed the pattern.

Decreases were done faster

Little Trees Hoodie

This is a little hoodie to go with the hat I made earlier.  It is for my nephew and his wife's first baby.

I bought a onesie and some jeggings to make a whole outfit

The hoodie is actually rather small.  It just measures 18 inches.

Baby Hoodie

The pattern is easy enough. I am not sure that I like the point on the hood.

I added a garter stitch edging all around in the same solid green as the hat.

I integrated button bands with the front pieces by adding garter stitches at the front edge.  I would probably make these a little wider if I were to do this again.

The pattern says it is made in moss stitch but the stitch used is not what I think of as moss stitch.  It is very easy but I found that it twisted so that the pieces looked to be stretched along one side.

Green Hat for Little Ears

My nephew's wife is expecting their first baby in December.  I know that my Mum has made them a quilt so I thought I would knit a jacket and hat.

I found a pattern on a ball of yarn for a hoodie which looked really cute.  The yarn was a pretty variegated one with some green in it. so I bought it.

My mother mentioned that they were going to have a green nursery and then I remembered that I had this green left over from another project (baby hoodie) and thought it would make a nice border to the jacket. Then I thought I would make a solid colour hat.

To be sure that I had enough for the hat I knit the hat first.  I needn't have worried there is still plenty of yarn.  I may even make the sleeves a solid colour  We'll see how that goes

The colour in the photo is very washed out.  The hat itself was easy enough to knit.  Not sure that the ear-flaps are clearly defined or even worth the trouble.  It is rather large.  I think it will wind up as a toddler hat!
